Abstract

This study analyzes 53 video observations from outdoor play in kindergartens, in relation to results from ITERS-R, (Infant / Toddler Environment Rating Scale-Revised) surveys from 206 kindergartens in Norway. The video observations are from outdoor activities and the ITERS-R results are from themes active physical play, science as well as sand and water play. Findings from ITERS-R shows that the material framework for play and learning is good, still the video materiel shows that there is a huge difference in facilitation for the youngest to explore outdoor play. For the very youngest, there are too few challenges. The content of the interaction between children and employees is indistinct, and active physical play is more facilitated than science exploration. Findings are discussed by theories of movement development and play and learning.
