Å høre til der du bor: om foreldres opplevelser av tilhørighet gjennom barnehagen

Sammendrag

Denne artikkelen belyser hvordan minoritetsforeldre kan danne tilhørighet til lokalsamfunnet gjennom barnehagen. Minoritet brukes i denne sammenheng om foreldre med migrantbakgrunn. Med lokalsamfunn menes formelle og uformelle fellesskap i nærmiljøer, institusjoner og organisasjoner i barnehagens nærområde. Studien er en del av et større forskningsprosjekt kalt Politics of belonging med støtte fra Nordforsk. Artikkelen har to sett av empiri: intervju med seks foreldre samt åtte gruppeintervju med 21 ansatte foretatt ved oppstart og avslutning av prosjektet. Gjennom innholdsanalyser av disse intervjuene drøftes forskningsspørsmålet om hvordan foreldre utvikler tilhørighet til lokalsamfunnet gjennom barnehagen. Artikkelens teoretiske utgangspunkt er hentet fra Nira Yuval-Davis’ forståelse av tilhørighet og Mark Granovetters teori om styrken i svake bånd. Forskning på foreldre og barnehage har ofte rettet seg mot foreldresamarbeid og om hva som preger møter mellom foreldre og barnehage. Mindre oppmerksomhet er blitt rettet mot barnehagens ringvirkninger på foreldrenes sosiale tilhørigheter. Denne artikkelens funn peker på betydningen av barnehagens ulike arbeidsmåter rettet mot foreldre. Barnehagen er en viktig arena hvor foreldres tilhørighet til lokalsamfunnet formes, særlig dersom barnehagen er bevisst på dette i sitt arbeid.

Belonging where you live: on parents’ experiences of belonging through ECEC

This article sheds light on how minority parents can form a sense of belonging to the local community through ECEC. Minority is used in this context for parents with a migrant background. Local community refers to formal and informal societies, institutions, and organizations in the vicinity of the ECEC. The study is part of a larger research project called Politics of belonging supported by Nordforsk. The article has two sets of empirical data: interview with six parents and eight group interviews with 21 employees conducted at the beginning and end of the project. Through these interviews, the research question of how parents develop belonging to the local community through the ECEC is discussed. The article is based on social scientist Nira Yuval-Davis’ understanding of belonging and Mark Granovetter’s theory of the strength of weak ties. Research on parents and ECEC has often focused on parent collaboration about the child and about what characterizes meetings between parents and ECEC. Less attention has been paid to the ECEC’s effects on parents’ social belongings. The findings of this article point to the importance of the ECEC’s work towards parents. ECEC is an important arena for parents’ belonging to the local community, especially if the ECEC is aware of this in its work.
